UFFB 2025: PROTEST(S) CONTINUES. GEORGIAN DOCUMENTARY CINEMA AGAINST THE AUTHORITARIAN REGIME (OmeU)

GE 2025 | Documentary | R: verschiedene

Curator: Irine Beridze. Guest: Georgian film scholar and curator Nino Dzandzawa.

For three years, over 450 Georgian filmmakers and cultural workers have protested the authoritarian control of Bidzina Ivanishvili’s government over the country’s cultural institutions, including the National Film Center.

The program “Protest(s) continues – Georgian documentary cinema against the authoritarian regime” presents films from the series Stories of Political Prisoners, featuring works by leading directors such as Salomé Jashi, Anna Dziapshipa, and Tiku Kobiashvili. These portraits highlight Georgia’s “prisoners of conscience” (სინდისის პატიმრები) and their personal struggles under repression.

The program concludes with Niniko Lekishvili’s documentary CHASE (დევნა, 2025), following a Georgian cinema star navigating activism, protest, and private life. A final discussion with cultural scientist Irine Beridze and film scholar Nino Dzandzawa will close the event.
